Backpack to Briefcase

Backpack to Briefcase: Powered by Alumni, Designed for Students

In today’s competitive job market, students need more than just academic knowledge—they need guidance, mentorship, and real-world connections. That’s where philanthropy steps in, not just as a financial contribution, but as a gift of time, experience, and opportunity. One shining example of this is the Backpack to Briefcase program at O'Neill Indianapolis, a philanthropic initiative that bridges the gap between college and career through alumni engagement.

Backpack to Briefcase would not exist without alumni funding

The generosity of alumni fuels every aspect of the program—from the career books students receive to the meals shared during networking sessions. But more than that, it’s their time, expertise, and willingness to give back that make the experience transformative.

“In my role… I look for multiple ways to impact our students as they work toward their career opportunities,” said Stacy Lozer, director of career services for O’Neill Indianapolis and an alumna of the MPA program. “As an alum of the MPA program, I also know the immense value of my degree and how it helped navigate my career through many different career opportunities.”

Her vision helped shape Backpack to Briefcase from the start:

“Who better to introduce our students to than our own alumni,” Lozer said. “The program was envisioned with just that in mind: connecting our alumni to our current students—future alumni.”

Whether it’s a resume review, a mock interview, or a career conversation, students walk away with more than just advice—they leave inspired.

“It brings me great joy as an alum to see that connection happen,” Lozer said.

What Is Backpack to Briefcase?

Offered each semester to students in the career class and capstone courses, Backpack to Briefcase is a career development event that pairs students with alumni for personalized, one-on-one mentoring sessions. Over the past three semesters, the program has seen:

  • 47 student participants
  • 13 engaged alumni, 7 of whom have returned for multiple events

Each student receives a 30-minute session with an alum, covering everything from resume and cover letter reviews to LinkedIn optimization and networking strategies. These sessions often evolve into meaningful career conversations, offering students insights they might not find elsewhere.

Real stories, real impact

The true value of Backpack to Briefcase lies in the stories that emerge:

  • Steve Broniarczyk met with a student interested in public safety management. He introduced her to a FEMA internship program she hadn’t known about. She applied and was accepted as a FEMA Corps leader—a life-changing opportunity sparked by a single conversation.
  • A graduate student connected with Ed Sagebiel, who immediately opened his professional network. Sagebiel’s support didn’t end with the event; he continued mentoring the student for over a year, meeting outside the program and offering ongoing guidance.
  • Jill Lees and Kevin Jowitt have helped countless criminal justice majors understand the path into law enforcement, offering practical advice and encouragement that students carry with them into their careers.

Why philanthropy matters

Philanthropy isn’t just about giving money—it’s about giving back. Alumni who participate in Backpack to Briefcase are investing in the next generation, sharing their time, wisdom, and networks. These acts of generosity create ripple effects, opening doors for students who might otherwise struggle to find their footing.

Programs like Backpack to Briefcase remind us that philanthropy is personal. It’s about relationships, mentorship, and the belief that one conversation can change a life. And for the students who walk into the event with questions and leave with confidence, it’s proof that giving back is one of the most powerful tools we have to shape the future.
